Herniated Disc
A bulging disc, commonly referred to as a slipped disc, is a common cause of back pain. Due to injury, wear and tear or ageing, it happens when the soft centre of an intervertebral disc becomes inflamed and slips out of it's casing.
Very few treatments other than chiropractic care will help with the relief of herniated disc pain in the long term. Medicines, such as NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can reduce the pain, but aside from surgical intervention with lifelong side-effects, chiropractic care is proven to be the most effective treatment possible. If you have a herniated disc, chiropractic treatment is almost certainly going to alleviate the pain immediately.
How Can A Chiropractor Help Me With A Herniated Disc?
Bulging disc treatment can be delivered in a variety of ways by a chiropractor. This may include chiropractic adjustments in combination with rehabilitation exercsises, to restore the spine to it's natural position and strengthen the affected area.
At ChiroCare 恺乐康, we also offer the DaBaoZha adjustment, which is a non-surgical chiropractic spinal decompression that carefully stretches and corrects the spine to take the pressure off the herniated disc.
The spine is made up of 24 bony coverings known as vertebrae, and inbetween them lie the intervertebral discs. These discs consist of fibrous tissue which holds together its centre which is a jelly like substance known as nucleus pulposus. The discs act as shock absorbers for the spine. When these discs are healthy, they keep the spine flexible while absorbing any impact. Sometimes a disease or an injury can cause a disc to rupture resulting in the inner gel-like substance leaking out of the disc. This type of injury is known as a herniated disc, but is also sometimes referred to as a ‘slipped disc’, ‘bulging disc’, ‘trapped nerve’ and even ‘sciatica’. Herniated discs cause stiffness and discomfort in the back but will not necessarily cause pain. Pain comes as and when a bulging disc touches or impacts upon a nerve, often then creating a trapped nerve.
Herniated Disc Treatment
Treatment will vary depending on the cause of your pain. Chiropractors have many methods available, including:
> Chiropractic Adjustments
> DaBaoZha Adjustment
> Percussion Therapy
> Muscle release techniques
> Trigger point therapy (which is a technique for getting a frozen muscle to release itself)
> Identification of related injuries or inflammation
> Advice for avoiding future problems
> Long and short term treatment plans
A chiropractor will also include advice and guidance on lifestyle changes and will incorporate strengthening exercises and stretching into your treatment sessions.
Interesting Facts About Disc Pain
Discogenic pain is pain originating from a damaged vertebral disc, particularly due to degenerative disc disease
Herniated disc can occur anywhere along the spine, but most often occurs in the lower back
Not all degenerated discs cause pain, but may have other symptoms like weakness, numbness or tingling
Herniated disc is sometimes called a bulging, protruding, ruptured or ‘slipped’ disc
Disc degeneration occurs naturally with age and doesn’t mean you will suffer from a bad back
It is one of the most common causes of lower back pain, as well as leg pain, or "sciatica"
Men between the ages of 20 and 50 are most likely to have a herniated disc
Disc pain can come on rapidly for no apparent reason, but the cause may well have been ongoing for many months
Staying seated for long periods of time can put an increased pressure on your spine and discs
Bulging discs put pressure on the surrounding nerve routes, resulting in pain that radiates down the back or other areas of the body
